What Is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy process on young womens face

Many people seek ways to regain their youthful skin and smooth out wrinkles. They often believe that surgical procedures are the fastest and most effective method to achieve this. While surgery can indeed provide instant results, it comes with its own set of risks and longer recovery times. However, there is a non-invasive alternative that can help you achieve your skincare goals without going under the knife—Ultherapy.

Ultherapy: What Is It?

Ultherapy is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses microfocused ultrasound energy to lift and tighten a person’s loose skin. It is primarily used on the face, neck and décolletage (chest area) to counteract the effects of sagging skin and loss of skin elasticity.

Benefits of Ultherapy

  • Non-Invasive Skin Tightening Treatment. Ultherapy does not require incisions or needles, making it a safe and non-invasive option for those looking to bring back their healthy skin’s youthful appearance without the risks related to cosmetic surgery. This ensures there are no scars, less risk of infection and minimal downtime.
  • Natural-Looking Results. One of the many benefits of Ultherapy is that it stimulates natural collagen production, a protein that keeps the skin firm and smooth. Over time, this causes natural-looking results as the skin slowly lifts and tightens, avoiding the “pulled” look that usually happens with surgical facelifts.
  • Minimal Downtime. Unlike surgical procedures that require a long recovery time, Ultherapy allows patients to return to their daily routines almost immediately after the procedure. This is highly beneficial for individuals who cannot afford to take time off for recovery.
  • Long-Lasting Effects. The results of Ultherapy can last up to a year or more as collagen production improves skin elasticity over time. This makes it a cost-effective solution than other treatments needing more frequent touch-ups.
  • Versatile Application. Ultherapy can be used on various body parts, such as the face, neck and chest area, making it a versatile option for addressing different areas of skin sagging.
  • Customizable Treatment. The procedure can be customized to an individual’s needs and goals. This type of approach guarantees that patients receive the most effective treatment for their skin types and problem areas.
  • Clinically Proven. FDA has cleared that Ultherapy is the only non-invasive treatment for lifting skin under the chin, on the neck and the eyebrow. Additionally, it has been clinically proven to enhance the line and wrinkle appearance on the décolletage, making it a trusted and reliable option for skin rejuvenation.

The Process of an Ultherapy Session

  • Initial Assessment. The skin tightening procedure starts with an initial consultation with a licensed medical professional, usually a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. The medical provider will assess your skin condition and discuss your aesthetic goals during this assessment.
  • Medical History. They will ask about your medical history, including any existing medical conditions, medications and previous cosmetic treatments, to make certain you are ideal for the procedure.
  • Custom Treatment Plan. The practitioner will outline an individual treatment plan based on the evaluation, specifying the areas to be treated and the expected results.

  • Skin Cleansing. On the day of the Ultherapy, the aestheticians will clean the treatment area thoroughly to remove makeup, oils or impurities.
  • Marking the Treatment Area. The aesthetician will mark the areas to be treated with a special pencil or marker to guide the application of ultrasound waves.
  • Applying Numbing Cream. They may also apply a topical anaesthetic to the skin to minimize discomfort during the procedure. This is typically left on for 30 to 60 minutes before the treatment starts.

Ultherapy Treatment

  • Gel Application. Aestheticians apply a layer of ultrasound gel to the treatment area. This gel helps transmit ultrasound energy into the skin.
  • Ultrasound Imaging. The practitioner will use an Ultherapy device with a transducer to visualize the targeted layers of tissue. This ensures that the ultrasonic energy is distributed precisely to the effective areas.
  • Delivery of Ultrasound Energy. Focused ultrasound energy is delivered to the deeper layers of the skin and the foundational tissue supporting the skin. The energy stimulates collagen production without affecting the skin’s surface.
  • Treatment Duration. The session length will depend on the treated area but typically ranges from 30 to 90 minutes.

Post-Treatment Care

  • Immediate Aftercare. Once you complete the procedure, the ultrasound gel is wiped off, and the skin is cleaned again. No bandages or dressings are required.
  • Recommended Care. The practitioner may provide specific post-care instructions, such as avoiding sun exposure and harsh skin care products for a few days. You may feel slight swelling, redness or tenderness in the treated area. However, these symptoms usually go away within a few days.

  • Monitoring Results. Results from Ultherapy are not instantaneous. It typically takes two to three months for new collagen to develop and even up to six months to see the full effect.
  • Follow-Up Visits. You may be scheduled for follow-up visits to assess the treatment’s effectiveness and progress. If necessary, additional sessions may be recommended to achieve optimal results.

Caring Tips to Follow After Ultherapy

  • Hydrate the Skin. Keep your skin well-moisturized and hydrated. Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to soothe post-treatment irritation.
  • Avoid Sun Exposure. Limit exposure to direct sunlight and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen lotion with 30 SPF to shield your skin from UV damage.
  • Gentle Skin Care. Use mild, non-irritating skin care products. Avoid using harsh exfoliants, retinoids and glycolic acids for a week after the procedure.
  • Stay Hydrated. Drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin from the inside out, which aids in the healing process.
  • Avoid Heat. Refrain from exposing your skin to high temperatures for a few days. This includes hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms.
  • No Makeup. Avoid applying makeup to the treated area for 24 hours to allow your skin to breathe and recover.
  • Sleep Elevated. Elevate your head slightly while sleeping to reduce the mild swelling or discomfort.
  • Monitor Skin Changes. Watch out for any unusual changes, prolonged skin redness or infection. Call your practitioner at once if you have skin concerns.
  • Gentle Massage. Light, gentle massage towards the treated area can alleviate tenderness and promote faster healing. However, it’s always best to follow the advice of your practitioner.
